    1. Mixpanel

    2. Amplitude

    3. Heap

  • Pros & Cons Comparison

How do they rack up to your specified needs?

Mainly web | Monthly active users <10K | Events (monthly) per avg. user <50 | Individual user tracking required | Certain tolerance for developers allocation

    Pros:

    • Top of the line visualization tool for analyzing user behaviors for both web and mobile products.
    • A perfect fit for all of your requirements
    • Price gradually scales by your requirements
    • Will most likely be less expensive than others
    • Excellent cross platform tracking
    Cons:
    • Weak when it comes to comparing new vs. returning users
    • Lacks user life-cycle tracking features
    • No qualitative data: heatmaps, session recording
    • No long has built-in engagement capacities (messaging, pop-ups, etc')

    Pros:

    • Top of the line visualization tool for user behavior
    • Excellent web, mobile and cross platform tracking
    • A bit more advanced retention views
    • Better prediction tools included in the basic plan
    Cons:
    • Will most likely be more expensive
    • Pricing by event is more difficult to predict
    • Does not allow setting up super-properties (vs. Mixpanel)

    Pros:

    • Autotracking - Fastest and simplest implementation - Begins tracking all event immediately
    • Very little dependency on developers and low cost of implementation and maintenance
    • Retroactive back fill - forgot to define an event? Define now and see it on all historic data as well
    • Effort analysis - automatically shows what users do between funnel steps
    Cons:
    • Visualization is less advanced than Mixpanel and Amplitude
    • Data overload
    • Autotracking is very limited for mobile apps
    • A bit more expensive than Mixpanel

  • Quick summary

Although the questionnaire can give us a great deal of information. It can only take us so-far in terms of understanding your product and your key points of interest. Yet, based on the data provided, we believe that Mixpanel or Amplitude should be the solutions to most seriously consider.

Heap comes 3rd, after a small gap. Nevertheless, if autotracking and dramatically decreasing developer dependency are more critical to you, it could be game changer.

    A word regarding qualitative tools

The above recommended are all quantitative tools, that provide great individuate or aggregated user data. Nevertheless, sometimes, mainly with low traffic product or B2B orgs, the ability to actually view a recording of the user's session is very valuable. That is what qualitative platforms, like Fullstory, Smartlook, HotJar, etc', provide.

The cons are the significant added cost and the need to sort out interesting sessions (0.1%) for the rest/

If the added cost (x2) is tolerable, we'd recommend implementing a qual platform, as long as it's integrated with your quant platform, so that you could use the quant to pinpoint and view only the most interesting and beneficial session recordings.

    * Heap have recently integrated a qual tool to their platform (due to the acquisition of Auryc). We have yet to evaluate it.
